Very Well Crafted Jan 01, 2008 I just wanted to join the list of people singing the praises of the Twisted Doors. It is easily the best foreign language tool I have ever come across! Having made several false starts trying to teach myself various languages, I am finding that reading (and hearing) French in the context of a story is the best mode of learning for me.
This French reader is unique in that the text is specifically designed to build the reader's vocabulary and grammar in a seamless progression, AND it contains a full line-by-line English translation, in addition to basic end-of-chapter reviews and a thorough glossary. Considering its purpose as a learning tool, the story is plenty gripping, and no less enjoyable for its campy elements. Moreover, the CD narration guides the reader through a nice variety of pacing, emotion, and intonation, and my wife and I have quite a good time attempting to imitate the characters' voices.
Obviously, the reader will not emerge from The Twisted Doors as a fluent French speaker, but this book lays a tremendous foundation in vocabulary, grammar, and written and spoken comprehension. After spending several weeks with DK's "15-Minute French" and then with Rosetta Stone, I have entirely stopped using both since purchasing The Twisted Doors. I only wish there was a sequel!
The Twisted Door Dec 19, 2007 The Twisted Door, including its CD, is an entertaining and progressive and fun way to increase one's skills in understanding spoken french.

Fun! Jul 12, 2007 If you're an absolute beginner, you cannot learn French from this book alone. Is is fun and interesting though to progress through the story and find out what happens. There's lot of good vocabulary to learn.

Simply oustanding! Jun 19, 2007 I found this book to be one of the best French learning tools I've encountered so far. It's simple and yet complex enough for adult learners. Together with the audio CD it provides a very interesting and unique way to learn this beautiful language.
