The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Russian structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Russian can actually be enjoyable and rewarding. The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only these pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts. When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed. With Pimsleur you get: - Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,
- Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,
- The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,
- 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.
Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills. Conversational Russian includes the 10 lessons from Pimsleur's Basic Russian plus an additional 6 lessons. The 16 lessons in Conversational Russian are the same first 16 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Russian Level 1. | | | |

So helpful Jun 05, 2008 I'll be traveling to Russia and needed a very quick crash course in speaking the language. I've learned other languages but this course, by far, is the easiest way to do so. I've been teaching myself to read Russian but after listening to these CDs, I've realized I was really off on my pronunciations. Not only have these CDs strengthened my speaking ability but they've made reading the language so much easier as well. These CDs will definitely complement any studying you are doing of this language. True, the CDs may initially seem repetitive and a tad boring but get past lesson one and you find that this really works Give it a chance and you will learn quite a bit in these sixteen lessons.

excellent introduction May 20, 2008 Anyone expecting more than a brief introduction to Russian from eight hours of instruction is far more optimistic than they ought to be. The other reviews on this product seem to be written by such optimists.
I, on the other hand, am a pessimist. I expect Russian will take a long time and much work to learn. So far, I have not been disappointed in this expectation. But Pimsleur's little 8 CD set makes the start of this work pretty fun.
Pimsleurs will seem slow at first (3 or 4 CDs until it picks up speed) because they build from nothing. And the dialogues DO progress quite a ways beyond "Do you speak Russian?" In the end, the set will give you a hundred, two hundred words of vocabulary -- something like that. You will have excellent pronunciation and the ability to understand Russians who speak these words at their normal speed. I think this is great for thirty bucks.
I find these Conversational Pimsleurs to be the best introduction to a language. You can use them to leverage yourself into further studies, like Teach Yourself Russian Complete Course (Book + 2CDs), which will get you reading and writing. If there is a better product to make a better start of languages, I haven't found it.
Note: To see what I think about the larger 16CD Pimsleurs, search Amazon's So You'd Like To guides for "learn a language for no good reason". I talk there about when the big ones are good and when other cheaper options are better.

Russian Pimsleur Basic Oct 21, 2007 I am 62 years old and worried that I had passed the 'maturation' level where it was possible for me to learn a new language. I had attempted French, Gaelic, and Czech in the past, thinking it necessary to learn the 'structure' of the language as well as the spoken word. I was so relieved to find that after a very short time, I felt comfortable with basic Russian phrases. I found myself able to pcik up limited dialog in Russian movies, and even to recognize printed words in transliteration. I think the learning process is different for each of us, but I know that when I am on my extended visit to Petersburg next year, I will feel comfortable that I have a foundation for communication.

Don"t buy Jan 04, 2007 I learned this whole series and then traveled to Ukraine, after which I realized only some of the words are pronounced right, though it was somewhat funny when I spoke as these native speakers did the people laughed at me, It will teach you to say thank you but not you are welcome. and thank you is not even close to how it is really pronounced

A good place to start. Dec 26, 2006 I have to say my weakest area in school was learning other languages. I was always the poorest student in class. At age 47, I found myself needing to learn Russian. I looked at my options. I tried two other programs and they did not work for me.
Now I am learning Russian using Pimsleur. I am not fast at learning it, but I am learning Russian! This course is more an introduction to the full Pimsleur courses. It is a good place to start.
If Pimsleur is teaching me Russian, I assume it will work for most people.
It takes effort, but it is working.
I recommend the full Pimsleur program.
